Chapter 1

"Don't be silly, Rowanheart!" Stonesplash purred, "Oh course they'll open their eyes! They'll do it, when they're ready."

Birdkit was curled up next to her mother and her sister, Lichenkit in a warm ball. Her mother's sent writhed around her filling her with warmth and contentment. Her tiny eyes itched with longing to open. Finally they opened like tiny flower petals blossoming at dawn.

Her green eyes blinked in the dazzling sunlight in the nursery. As she gazed around, her eyes filled with wonder as she spotted Rowanheart's kits, Riverkit, Birchkit, and Firekit. They were much bigger than she imagined, almost twice her size!

"You've opened your eyes!" Her mother cried happily."I told you she would!" She mewed to Rowanheart.

Stonesplash was a beautiful silver furred queen with blue eyes. Birdkit glanced back her fur, hopefully. It was spotted.

'I wish I had silver fur.' Birdkit thought. She came out of her reverie as she heard Rowanheart reply.

"Of corse." The older, ginger, queen consented, dipping her head to Birdkit.

"I was waiting for the right time." Birdkit squeaked, bouncing on her paws. "Can I please go explore the camp?"

"Alright, just don't go far"

Birdkit wound around the silver, queen purring happily. She trotted through the tunnel of ferns, the light casting green dappled shadows.

As she emerged from the tunnel her eyes drank in the seen. She was at the bottom of a sandy ravine dappled with trees and shoots of grass. A huge rock jutted out of the earth high above the camp.

"I can surely get a better view of the camp up there!" She mewed to her self.

Birdkit ran as fast as her tiny paws would carry her to the rock. As she reached the rock she discovered that climbing to the top would be much harder than she thought. She leapt as high as she could and snagged her claws in a crack on the rock. Using her tiny haunches she pushed her self up to the top.

Standing on the edge she could see the whole camp.

"Wow! The camp is a whole lot bigger than I thought." She mewed.

"What are you doing up there?" A voice mewed far below. A slim light brown tabby she-cat who smelled of herbs, gazed up at her with amber eyes.

"I'm getting a better view of the camp," Birdkit squeaked."You can see for miles up here!"

"Oh are you?" The she-cat mewed sounding amused. "I'd get down form there, that's where Larkstar calls her meetings."

"Oh, okay." Birdkit mewed scuffling her paws embarrassedly.

Then she spotted Stonesplash coming out of the nursery with Lichenkit her eyes wide with wonder. Birdkit ran to her side.

"Hello little one did you discover the camp?" She mewed licking her kit between her ears.

"Yep!" She squeaked "I went on that big rock and saw the whole camp! I also met that she-cat over there" She flicked her tail back at the rock. "She smelled funny."

"Wow you climbed that?" Lichenkit mewed excitedly her amber eyes growing. "I want to try!"

Her mother wound her tail around her kits, "You have plenty of time to try now let me take you into the forest!"

Birdkit leaped in to the air excitedly and followed her mother out of the camp.
